Success shines on Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday Reef Festival 2010

A winter of unseasonable bad weather and economic concerns blew away Friday just past as Whitsunday Reef Festival got under way.
Celebrating 10 years in 2010, the festival had come of age with the efforts of a dedicated committee with the support of Airlie Beach and Whitsunday businesses/
Across the “long weekend” of events, the attendance numbers at every event were at a peak. Sell out ticketed events include the Barrier Reef TAFE Palmers Restaurant luncheon, Airlie Day Spa Comedy Gala at Waterline and the Fashion TV Frocktails at Deja Vu, Waters Edge Resort.
Elsewhere the glorious array of free events included massive fireworks, street parade, free movies, raft regatta, sand scuplting, family fun day, free live music from great local and regional talent, boat display, lantern parade, writing competition.
With final attendance figures yet to be calculated its clear that over 10,000 people attended reef festival events making for a record performance to match the efforts of volunteers and sponsors. Surveys across the weekend reinforced the events importance in drawing visitors to the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach. Regional towns represented in the results were peppered with the likes of Mackay, Condon, Home Hill, Ayr, Andergrove, Glenlee and Townsville, while visitors already visiting the area from further afield included Tasmania, the UK, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Thank you to all the contributing sponsors, businesses, volunteers and the fabulous committee that brought to Airlie our biggest success of 2010.
