GSL Aviation pilots land on their feet in the Whitsundays.

Not often tossed from first floor windows, pilots Krysta Gugenberger and Ashley Howe have demonstrated their ability to land on their feet with the arrival in the Whitsundays of GSL Aviation. GSL Aviation now have operations at the Whitsunday (WAVE) Airport at Flametree. Swapping the heat and dust of the outback and Lake Eyre, the pair of pilots drew the short straws to move from the inland job to now be the pilots operating scenic tours of the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven and the adjacent Great Barrier Reef is scenic flights starting from $69.
“You see lots of cows when flying around Marree and Lake Eyre, so it's a little different in the Whitsundays.” understates Krysta. The comparisons are stark, as the Lake Eyre flight circuit so popular with the Grey Nomads is literally miles away from the diversity of the Whitsunday Island aerial vista. The standard Whitsunday scenic flight with GSL Aviation takes in islands, including Hamilton, two passes along Whitehaven Beach, including spectacular Hill Inlet and then out to Hardy Reef via Border Island. At Hardy Reef, there are two passes over the very special “Heart Reef” and back to Airlie Beach via Hayman, Hook and Langford.
Our aircraftt on the day was a relatively new “Airvan”. 8 seats configured in rows of 2 including the pilot, everyone has a great view through the large slightly convex windows of the Airvan, meaning everyone gets a great view of islands, beach and reef during the 1 hour flight. Over the reef, countless turtles and Mantarays could be seen from the 500 feet height over the reef as their dark bodies contrasted against the light blue greens and browns of the reef top.
Over flying Hayman and Langford during the afternoon return to Airlie, is opportune reminder for a local to remember just how lucky he is to have the Islands of the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach as his home.
